Traffic disruption expected in capital during EU meetings
Dublin will experience significant disruption for four days next week as the largest policing operation in the history of the State takes place as part of Ireland's EU Presidency.
Dublin residents and travelers should prepare for significant traffic disruption between Tuesday and Friday next week due to an unprecedented police operation as Ireland hosts the European Union presidency. European leaders, around 50 in number, are set to convene at the Convention Centre on North Wall Quay and a dinner for visiting leaders will be held at the National Gallery on Merrion Square on Thursday evening.
This is the largest gathering of heads of state or government in Ireland's history, necessitating a major security effort.
Security preparations have been ongoing for weeks, with An Garda Síochána, Ireland's national police force, leading the charge in coordination with local authorities and transport providers. The operation will commence incrementally starting next Tuesday, impacting public transport and causing major traffic delays in areas surrounding the Convention Centre, National Gallery, several hotels, and routes between Dublin Airport and Baldonnell Aerodrome.
Dublin City Council has issued a warning to anyone planning to travel to Dublin city, the airport, or port during this period, advising them to allocate ample time for travel, monitor public transport updates, and stay informed via social media. Gardaí have emphasized their commitment to ensuring the security of the event while minimizing the impact on the public, acknowledging that some disruption is unavoidable but striving to keep it to a minimum.
