Siblings seek firefighters' help to rescue bedridden mother from rising floodwaters

SHAH ALAM: A family of three siblings reached out to the Fire and Rescue Department for help in rescuing their bedridden 60-year-old mother from rapidly rising floodwaters in Kampung Paya Jaras Hilir, Sungai Buloh. Nur Nazihah Asyiqin Mohd Said, 27, explained that they had not anticipated the rapid water rise and had to call for assistance from the emergency services.

The siblings were residing in a flood-prone area, but usually, the water level increased gradually. The downpour began around 10pm the previous night, with the intensity increasing at midnight. By 2am, the siblings were awakened by the rising water, with the waist-high level reached by 3am. Concerned for her mother's safety, who had suffered a stroke, Nur Nazihah asked her brother to seek assistance.

The Fire and Rescue team arrived at 3.30am and transported them to the Sinar Pagi temporary relief centre. Despite living in the house for 25 years, the family had not faced such extreme flooding before. This time, they only managed to save a few items as the water level rose too quickly, and they did not have time to retrieve their mother's medication.

The Social Welfare Department is assisting the family in obtaining the necessary medication. Although the floodwaters have receded, the family is hesitant to return home, fearing another potential flood, especially with rain expected later in the day.
