Pangram expands its AI detection tools to video and images
The company behind the widely used tool for AI text is moving into more kinds of AI slop.
Pangram, a company known for its AI-generated text detection tool, has expanded its offerings to include video and image detection capabilities. With these new tools, Pangram users can now upload videos to assess whether AI was used to create or edit them. The tool can differentiate between videos that are partially AI-generated and those that are entirely generated by AI. It also includes a heatmap feature to highlight which parts of the video are likely AI-created.
The video detection model, in particular, excels at spotting frontier AI video content, and internal tests showed it could identify AI videos with over 98% accuracy, outperforming other detection tools. In addition to video, Pangram has improved its AI image detection abilities. Its previously released image model, Pangram Image 1.0, is now available through a Chrome extension that automatically scans images while browsing and flags those likely to be AI-generated.
In tests, the image model flagged over 99% of AI images, with a minimal false positive rate of just 0.27%.
However, there are limitations to these AI detection tools. At resolutions below 512 x 512 pixels, results come with a reduced confidence disclaimer. For instance, a Pangram CEO's demonstration of the Chrome extension on Pinterest's website flagged two obviously authentic images as AI-generated, marked as "unsure." The company attributes these challenges to phone cameras' AI postprocessing, which adds detail to real photos.
Pangram had to build a robust model that can distinguish AI edits from fully AI-generated visuals. Additionally, the company delayed the image model's release to test its performance on various iPhone 18 Pro cameras, as the initial model flagged images from these phones' cameras as AI-generated. Pangram's AI image and video detection tools are now available to subscribers, with free accounts allowing a limited number of checks without signing up for a paid plan.
