Mitra programmes boost income for 52pc of Indian community entrepreneurs, improve job prospects for 77pc

Kuala Lumpur, Nov 4 — A recent Impact Study conducted by Universiti Malaya on the Malaysian Indian Community Transformation Unit's (Mitra) entrepreneurship and economic programmes revealed promising results for 2021-2023. The study, which surveyed 2,100 participants across 135 initiatives, found that 52% of those involved experienced an increase in income, while 77% reported improved employment prospects.

The Human Resources Ministry (Kesuma) attributed these findings to the socioeconomic development dimensions of income, employment, entrepreneurship, and education.

Respondents not only reported higher incomes but also an improvement in overall household financial stability, with 46% of participants sharing this positive outcome. In terms of entrepreneurship, 52% of Economic Cluster participants noted enhanced business skills, while 30% observed growth in their businesses or entrepreneurial ventures. In the education sector, cash assistance for students at higher learning institutions (IPT) had a significant impact, with mean scores between 4.48 and 4.64 out of five.

Moreover, 85% of academic mentoring programme participants recorded improved academic performance. The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to the Indian community's development through education and economic empowerment initiatives, especially for B40 and M40 income groups, in alignment with Malaysia's Madani aspirations. For 2026, the government plans to strengthen this commitment through targeted initiatives like Celik MADANI, Kalvi Madani, Peranti Madani, and Uyarvu Madani programmes.
