MDEdit – fast, minimal WYSIWYG Markdown editor

MDEdit is a fast, minimal WYSIWYG Markdown editor written in Rust with egui . It works like Obsidian's live preview: markers are hidden everywhere except on the line with the cursor, so # Title becomes a heading as soon as you move away from it. Features Live preview of headings, bold, italic, strikethrough, ==highlight== , inline code and code blocks, links, [[wiki links]] , #tags , footnotes,…

MDEdit is a swift and streamlined WYSIWYG Markdown editor built with Rust and egui. It operates similarly to Obsidian's live preview, concealing markers across the interface except for the location of the cursor. With the cursor moved away from a marker, Markdown syntax such as headings, bold, italic, strikethrough, highlight, inline code, and code blocks are visibly applied.

MDEdit supports various elements including links, wiki links, tags, footnotes, comments, horizontal rules, front matter, lists, tasks with hanging indents and clickable checkboxes, and blockquotes and callouts (like note, tip, warning, danger, question, etc.). Tables with customizable column alignment are also supported, alongside a range of formula types such as $…$, \($…\), $$…$$, \[…\], \boxed{}, and \text{}.

The editor allows for the insertion of images from files or base64-encoded data, as well as from embedded sources, with options to set widths. Users can paste images using Ctrl+V if images are in the clipboard. MDEdit provides keyboard shortcuts for formatting selections as well as for bold, italic, and other elements. These actions also apply to the currently selected text.

Zooming the font can be achieved through Ctrl+scroll. The single-instance functionality of MDEdit enables the opening of the chosen file in a new tab within the existing window by running mdedit file.md once more.

In terms of navigation, pressing the middle mouse button or Shift+Insert allows for the pasting of text selected via the primary selection on Linux. MDEdit adheres to the default settings of Obsidian's dark theme, utilizing the Inter font for text and Source Code Pro for code, both embedded. If these are unavailable, Noto Sans 10 is employed as a fallback.

The editor is designed to refuse binary and very large files (over 5 MB) to prevent freezing. MDEdit supports Windows line endings (CRLF) during saving and treats Ctrl+click differently – it opens only web and mail links without running programs or scripts. For reference, example files demonstrating all supported elements can be found at examples/example.md (English) and examples/przyklad.md (Polish) in the GitHub repository: https://github.com/ordigital/mdeditor.
