Killer who escaped Tennessee prison captured after week-long manhunt

Jacob Morley, a convicted murderer serving a life sentence in Tennessee, was apprehended on Tuesday after escaping from the Northwest Correctional Complex over a week ago, officials announced. At 28 years old, Morley broke free from the prison on October 25 by slipping through a fence while still dressed in his prison uniform. Surveillance footage captured Morley stealing a truck from a nearby farm, which was subsequently abandoned in Marion, Illinois, about 193 kilometers north of the prison and 145 kilometers southeast of St. Louis.

Morley's escape led to a massive manhunt involving various law enforcement agencies. After his attempted escape into North Carolina, Morley was ultimately captured in Missouri. Convicted of first-degree murder, aggravated burglary, tampering with evidence, vandalism, and evading arrest, Morley had been serving his sentence for the 2022 killing of a co-worker, Cody Birchfield, whose body was found in a box under Morley's residence in Carter County, Tennessee.

Since his escape, Tennessee's prison system has faced scrutiny following several violent incidents within its facilities, including attacks by inmates and staff members. A grand jury indicted multiple individuals in July for various violent acts, including inmate killings. Following a botched execution in September, Commissioner Frank Strada resigned from his position after less than three years in the role.

State Senator Tom Hatcher called for new leadership within the Department of Correction, emphasizing the need for increased oversight of the state's prisons.
