Keisha Lance Bottoms has become the first Black woman elected governor in the United States, securing victory in Georgia’s gubernatorial election. The former Atlanta mayor defeated Republican businessman Rick Jackson, marking a historic win for the Democratic party in the politically competitive state. Despite a significant financial gap between the two campaigns, Bottoms emerged victorious, marking the first time a Democrat has won Georgia’s governorship since 1998.
During her victory celebration in Atlanta, Bottoms emphasized her commitment to serving all Georgians and vowed to oppose the policies of the Trump administration. Her win also highlights the growing political influence of the Atlanta metropolitan area, which has increasingly shaped electoral outcomes in the state.
