I got tired of my portfolio going stale, so I made one that rebuilds itself from GitHub

Every developer portfolio I have made was accurate for about a month. After that it showed what I had built last spring, and the projects I was actually proud of lived only on GitHub. I'm a data engineer, and data that has to be copied by hand into a second place goes stale. So I stopped copying it. Forkfolio treats your GitHub account as the source of truth. Developer portfolios often fall out of date quickly, showing work from months prior and lacking the projects one is truly proud of. One engineer, frustrated by this, created a portfolio that automatically rebuilds itself from their GitHub account. Forkfolio fetches public repositories, pinned projects, programming languages, stars, and contribution history from GitHub on a nightly basis. This keeps the portfolio at most one day behind.

GitHub webhooks and cron jobs are used to trigger updates, though syncing can be initiated by other means like a push to the repository or pressing the sync button. To prevent duplicate or conflicting data, a locking system is in place. All portfolios share the same data structure, allowing designers to switch templates without losing content. There are currently 21 unique designs available.

A chat assistant is included, capable of answering inquiries about the developer's GitHub projects at any time of day. For private repositories, only framework names are read to avoid accidentally attributing work to the wrong project. The free plan provides a hosted portfolio with nightly updates, the AI assistant, and three designs. Upgrading to a $19 one-time fee unlocks all 21 designs and custom domain hosting. Since launching in July, about 160 developers have created a Forkfolio.
