Europe Urges Citizens to Pack Emergency Supplies for First 72 Hours

The European Commission has released new guidelines to assist citizens in preparing for emergencies, focusing on sustaining essential needs during the initial 72 hours of a crisis. Commissioner Hadja Lahbib unveiled these recommendations at the European Civil Protection Forum and announced plans for an annual EU Preparedness Day, slated for October 23, 2027.

The guidance aims to cultivate a more resilient Europe by encouraging individuals to take practical steps, such as assembling emergency kits and understanding appropriate responses during disasters.

The guidelines emphasize four key areas: ensuring self-sufficiency for 72 hours, educating the public on preparedness, fostering disability-inclusive planning, and promoting clear risk communication. Key recommendations include assembling basic emergency supplies, creating grab bags, and integrating preparedness education into early childhood and primary education. Efforts will be made to train educators and develop age-appropriate, non-frightening activities to engage children in the process.

Accessibility is a crucial aspect of the guidelines, with a strong emphasis on involving people with disabilities in planning efforts to ensure that emergency preparations cater to their unique needs. The proposed date for EU Preparedness Day coincides with the anniversary of the European Civil Protection Mechanism's establishment, marking 25 years of collaboration and coordinated disaster responses within and beyond the EU.

The guidance may be subject to further refinement as authorities gather feedback and evaluate lessons learned during its implementation.
