Democrat Abdul El-Sayed becomes first Muslim elected US senator

Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has achieved a historic milestone as the first Muslim elected to the United States Senate. This significant achievement occurred after his victory in Michigan's closely watched midterm election, which projected him as the new senator after the retirement of Gary Peters.

The 42-year-old Egyptian-American public health official will take office when the new Congress begins in January. El-Sayed's path to this historic position was paved with a competitive Democratic primary in August, where he successfully defeated Representative Haley Stevens before being chosen as his party's candidate for the general election.

Throughout his campaign, El-Sayed championed progressive causes, advocating for universal healthcare through Medicare for All, reduced housing costs, limiting the power of wealthy donors in politics, and improving economic opportunities for working families. His stance on US support for Israel also played a significant role in the contest, where he criticized American aid to Israel, labeled its operations in Gaza as genocide, and called for an end to unconditional US military assistance.

This historic election marked a significant step forward for Muslim representation in American politics. While Muslim Americans have previously held positions in the House of Representatives, no Muslim had been elected to the Senate before El-Sayed's win. Keith Ellison made history in 2006 as the first Muslim elected to Congress, and Tlaib and Omar became the first Muslim women elected to the House in 2018.
