The Dawoodi Bohra community has unveiled a new environmental initiative called ‘Trees for Travellers’ to promote sustainable travelling and living. This program, managed by the 143-year-old community trust Fayze Husayni, will see a tree planted for every individual traveling on an international flight. The first tree planting event will take place in Tunisia, coinciding with the community's pilgrimage to the country.
The initiative is part of Project Rise, the Dawoodi Bohra community's global humanitarian and social welfare program.
Each traveler will generate a carbon footprint of around one tonne of carbon dioxide on a return flight from Mumbai to Tunisia. A single tree can absorb a similar amount of carbon dioxide over its lifetime, thereby mitigating the emissions from each pilgrim's journey. Moreover, the tree planting endeavor aims to restore green cover and enhance biodiversity.
Travelers will receive a personalized Oxy Park Tree Adoption Certificate in their pre-departure travel kits, which is linked to a real tree planted in their name. This allows them to monitor its growth digitally post their journey.
Joone Burhani, the president of the Fayze Husayni Trust, Mumbai, expressed that while a pilgrimage lasts only a few days, its spiritual benefits are intended to endure for a lifetime. He emphasized that the tree planting will leave a lasting impact on the environment. He stated, “A tree planted in a traveller's name will clean the air, shelter birds, and provide shade for generations."
The initiative aims to instill a sense of responsibility towards the earth and future generations among the pilgrims. The trust plans to extend the Trees for Travellers program to additional pilgrimages and destinations.
