Detectives in Bungoma, Kenya have seized 170.8 kilograms of cannabis, estimated to be worth Sh5.1 million, following a fatal road crash. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) revealed that a suspected drug trafficker fled the scene after colliding with a motorcyclist along the Malaba-Webuye highway.
The National Anti-Narcotics Investigations Bureau (NANIB) in Bungoma, in collaboration with officers from DCI Webuye West, intercepted a white Mazda CX-5 suspected of carrying narcotics. Intelligence led them to set an ambush along the Malaba-Webuye road, where the Mazda approached, spotted the detectives, and accelerated away. This triggered a high-speed chase that concluded when the vehicle crashed into a red TVS motorcycle, registration number KMFV 109F.
The motorcyclist, Muzungu Munialo, tragically lost his life in the accident, while the driver of the Mazda abandoned the vehicle and managed to escape.
Upon processing the accident scene, traffic officers collected evidence before detectives launched a search of the abandoned Mazda. Inside, they discovered 162 bales of cannabis, tightly wrapped in yellow adhesive tape, amounting to 170.8 kilograms. The street value of the seized narcotics is estimated at Sh5,124,000. Additionally, investigators recovered a registration number, KF2 8588, which might have been used to hide the vehicle’s identity.
The DCI suspects that the driver’s escape was part of a broader scheme to conceal the vehicle’s true purpose. They have now turned over the vehicle and the seized narcotics to NANIB Bungoma for further investigation. The agency is actively pursuing the driver who fled the scene and aims to uncover the larger network behind this suspected drug trafficking operation.
The DCI extended condolences to Munialo's family, friends, and relatives following his untimely death. This incident highlights the ongoing efforts by security agencies to dismantle narcotics trafficking networks and curb the illegal drug trade in various regions across Kenya.
