2027: CAN disowns cleric, reaffirms political neutrality

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has distanced itself from Archbishop Chivir Chianson, who claimed the position of General Secretary, and from a group allegedly using its name to support a political candidate prior to the 2027 general elections. CAN's President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, clarified in a statement on Wednesday that neither Chianson nor his group had any affiliation with the association.

Okoh emphasized that CAN had not authorized or endorsed any political mobilization through Chianson or his group. Any political stances or activities linked to them should not be considered as official positions of the Christian body. CAN reaffirmed its commitment to political neutrality and warned against any attempts by unauthorized individuals to appropriate its identity and exploit its name for political interests.

The umbrella body representing Christians across Nigeria stated that it would continue to address national issues objectively and hold political leaders accountable, regardless of their party affiliations, without endorsing any political party or candidate. In light of these developments, CAN urged the public and media organizations to disregard Chianson's claims of official representation and verify the credentials and institutional affiliations of such individuals.

The Christian body further stated that it would take appropriate measures to safeguard its name, identity, and institutional integrity against unauthorized representation and misrepresentation.
