Snowflake unveils AI governance tools for enterprise agents

MENLO PARK, Calif. - Snowflake Inc. introduced new tools to govern AI agents used in enterprise systems during its Snowflake Expedition 2026 event. The Business Ontology and Cortex AI Gateway are the main additions. Business Ontology lets organizations define business terms officially across their data systems, while Cortex AI Gateway secures AI agent connections and enforces access policies.

Business Ontology, part of Snowflake Horizon Catalog, collects metadata from various sources and logs changes for audit purposes. Cortex AI Gateway's new features include Cortex Sandboxes for secure code execution and Agent Abuse Detection to spot unauthorized operations. The gateway also offers cost governance by attributing AI spending to specific users or teams.

According to a survey, 55% of senior executives reported lack of business context as a major issue for low-quality AI insights, while 45% cited data fragmentation. Companies like Glean, Kargo, dentsu, and Merkle are already using these new capabilities. Uniphore plans to extend Cortex AI Gateway controls to agents deployed for joint customers.

Business Ontology is in public preview, while some features of Cortex AI Gateway are still in private preview or under development.
