Deterministic Zero-Cloud Evaluation for AI Agents: Eliminating LLM-Judge Token Burn via Cryptographic Receipts

How do you know if your autonomous AI agent is actually getting better? Today, the industry defaults to LLM-as-a-Judge (using GPT-4 to grade agent traces). But this approach has three critical flaws: Severe Token Waste: Evaluating 100 multi-turn agent runs burns $50+ in evaluation API calls. Non-Deterministic Flakiness: The judge LLM gives different grades to the identical agent output on…

Determining the effectiveness of autonomous AI agents can be challenging, as the current practice of using LLM-as-a-Judge (GPT-4 grading agent traces) leads to significant issues. These include excessive token consumption, unpredictable grading from the same input across different sessions due to model drift, and potential security risks from exposing sensitive data through third-party evaluation clouds.

To address these problems, researchers have developed agent-eval-harness, a deterministic and cloud-free evaluation engine specifically designed for autonomous agents. This system relies on Invariant Assertion Matrices and SHA-256 Merkle Receipts instead of subjective judgment from LLMs.

Invariant Assertion Matrices define formal criteria for evaluation, such as necessary JSON schema adherence, constraint constraints on tool call sequences, and limits on allowed latency. A Red-Team Leak Scanner is also integrated to automatically scan agent outputs for any unencrypted secrets, API keys, or private IP address leaks.

Each evaluation conducted using agent-eval-harness generates a cryptographic SHA-256 Merkle Receipt, providing an immutable verification of the test suite's success on a particular commit. This enables transparency and traceability of the evaluation process.

The evaluation process can be easily implemented using Python. After installing the agent-eval-harness library via pip, users can create an evaluation suite with predefined criteria using AssertionRule objects. These rules include checks for schema validation, tool sequence validity, absence of secret leaks, and maximum latency requirements.

To evaluate an agent trace, the harness is initialized with the default settings. The EvaluationSuite object is then passed along with the path to the agent trace JSON file. The harness evaluates the trace against the defined criteria and outputs whether the evaluation passed, the percentage score achieved, and the cryptographic Merkle Receipt hash. Importantly, this entire process incurs no costs associated with LLM-judge tokens, as no cloud API calls are made.

Measuring AI Crawler Visits and AI Referrals on a Law Firm Site

If you build or maintain websites for criminal defense firms, someone at the firm will eventually ask whether ChatGPT or Perplexity is sending them clients.

  • AI crawlers fetch law firm site, indicating page citations and user queries
  • Identify AI crawlers via IP address lists and server logs, excluding JavaScript analytics
  • Capture AI referrals using UTM parameters, tracking calls and form submissions
