A look at Evansville women's basketball entering Year 1 under Ben Wierzba
UE women's basketball opens the 2026-27 season Tuesday night at DePaul following a challenging offseason.
Ben Wierzba, the new head coach of the University of Evansville women's basketball team, has emphasized the resiliency of his first team. This resilience comes despite a challenging offseason that included the tragic loss of sophomore guard Jordan Scott. Wierzba believes that the Purple Aces will be exponentially better by the end of the 2026-27 season.
The exhibition game against IU East on October 25 revealed a roster heavily impacted by injuries, with only six available players. Wierzba's coaching experience, including 25 years at the Division I level, has helped him lay the foundation for a successful year. He highlights Avery Kelley, Mireia Musfaros, Marina Artero, and Kaiden Kreinhagen as key players who will start the season and contribute significantly.
Despite the challenges, Wierzba remains optimistic, stating that his team is focused on getting better each day and paying attention to the details.
