Top transfer Rashunda 'Spider' Jones. Why she chose ASU | Exclusive
ASU point guard Rashunda "Spider" Jones talks about her first season in Tempe in an exclusive Q&A with The Republic.
Arizona State University women's basketball team will be bolstered by several new talent, including guard Rashunda Spider Jones, a senior from South Bend, Indiana. She spent her freshman and sophomore years at Purdue before transferring to Michigan State for her junior season. Jones is known as "Spider" because of her speed and ability to reach places quickly. In an interview with The Arizona Republic, she discussed her decision to join ASU.
When asked about the conversations leading to her decision, Jones stated, "We talked about the culture of the team and how I would fit into it. Coach Molly Miller's coaching style was also a major factor. I told her no three times, but then I spoke with my mom, who said that if I could have Molly come to my hometown, I would definitely go. It was a no-brainer, as the 25-hour drive is manageable, and I even offered to bring my mom along."
Jones described her initial adjustment to the new program as positive. "The team comes together really well. I didn't know how we would gel in the summer, but playing with them and learning their style has been amazing."
Concerning the freshmen, Jones highlighted their potential. "Quin Nya Gray De Sanders is an excellent point guard; she's fast and a strong defender. Averie Lower can shoot exceptionally well." She also noted her own improvement: "My game has progressed significantly. In my freshman and sophomore years, I was trying to be a one-man team without fully understanding the role. Playing with two-man systems in Michigan State helped me grow. Here, my point guard skills have improved substantially."
Regarding ASU's defensive approach, Jones expressed enthusiasm. "I love the defensive style. It reminds me of my high school days and AAU experiences, where I always focused on pressuring the ball and playing fast. It brings back those old roots and feels natural."
