OpenIDEA: The IDE you know, rebuilt in Rust

OpenIDEA is a new IDE that retains the familiar IntelliJ IDEA features but is built using Rust. This includes the keymap, tool windows, and the search-everything functionality that users know and love. The IDE offers a full suite of tools including an editor, code insight, debugger, Git integration, terminal, database and HTTP clients for over 60 programming languages.

OpenIDEA is available for macOS, Windows, and Linux. It has been tested with a large Python project with ~770 files, and a release build of OpenIDEA ran the same Python code as IntelliJ IDEA on the same hardware configuration. While IntelliJ IDEA performs a deeper analysis of Python, the time to readiness was not the same as it depends on the resources available. Both IDEs were measured using the same method, available in the source repository.

OpenIDEA is written in Rust 1.96, Node 22, and uses pnpm for package management along with the Tauri framework. To enable native notebook execution, two separate Python environments are required with ipykernel installed. The IDE's source code is available under the Apache 2.0 license. The third-party assets used are listed in the THIRD_PARTY_LICENSES.md file.

OpenIDEA is not affiliated with JetBrains, the company behind IntelliJ IDEA. The trademark IntelliJ IDEA belongs to JetBrains s.r.o.
