Longest truce of Ukraine war ends in Kherson

The longest cease-fire in the ongoing Ukraine war came to an end on Sunday after Russia rejected an extension offer, according to Ukrainian officials. The brief truce, brokered by US first lady Melania Trump, allowed for a humanitarian mission to the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky, which concluded the five-year conflict. Neither side reported any violations during the truce, which lasted from October 27 to November 1.

Ukraine's Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, called the temporary pause a significant step in joint humanitarian efforts with Russia. With US-mediated talks between Russia and Ukraine set to resume this month following the Iran strikes, Kherson residents hope the brief respite will lead to new peace initiatives.

However, concerns remain that fighting could be worse when it resumes, as Russian forces have been using the calm to bolster their positions. Ukrainian military officials warn locals to be vigilant against possible Russian attacks following the truce's expiration. Additionally, Ukraine's air force and anti-disinformation center suspect that the country's air raid alert system may have been hacked, as false alerts of a radiation threat appeared on the application.

Despite these concerns, the cease-fire marked a much-needed pause in the conflict, providing a "breath of fresh air" for residents of Kherson.
