Hamilton reflects on Schumacher memories after Ferrari pole in Mexico

Lewis Hamilton achieved a historic milestone by setting his 105th pole position and becoming the first Ferrari driver to do so, ahead of his Mercedes teammate George Russell during Saturday's qualifying for the Mexico City Grand Prix. The two drivers are the only ones with a chance to prevent Kimi Antonelli from clinching the title on Sunday, as they must both win and hope the Italian finishes below ninth.

For Hamilton, this marked his first pole since the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2023 and the oldest ever pole sitter for Ferrari since Mario Andrette in 1982. Hamilton recorded the fastest lap of the session at one minute and 16.514 seconds, edging out Russell by 0.009 seconds. Charles Leclerc finished third, while Max Verstappen, holding a one-place grid penalty for Sunday's race, took fourth.

Antonelli started fifth for Mercedes, with Lando Norris, Isack Hadjar, Liam Lawson, Arvid Lindblad, and Pierre Gasly of Alpine rounding out the top ten. The session began with local hero Sergio Perez, aiming for his 300th Grand Prix, leading the field, but was forced to stop on track, resulting in a red flag stoppage. Hamilton initially topped Q1 before a challenging Q2, ultimately securing pole position in Q3.
