Jose Mourinho, Real Madrid's head coach, suggested "often the best thing you can do is keep your mouth shut" in response to the controversial comments made by Kylian Mbappe about China's former leader, Mao Zedong. Mourinho acknowledged that causing offense is one of the "dangers of today’s world" but praised Mbappe for his "true class" in quickly apologizing for his ill-judged remarks.
The France forward faced backlash after a meme was superimposed on his face resembling Mao Zedong, leading to criticism from Chinese brands and social media users. Mbappe expressed regret for his actions, acknowledging that he "now understands that it hurt many people in China and in Chinese communities around the world." Mourinho, who won La Liga during his first tenure at Real Madrid in 2011-12, expressed no concern over being misrepresented through AI-generated fake video clips of him and Mbappe, emphasizing the club's continued support for both players.
