Walmart Gives Surprise Gift Cards Over Canceled Zelda Switch 2 Orders

Nintendo launched a special edition Nintendo Switch 2 to coincide with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time's release on November 5th. The console was highly sought-after, leading to overselling and the cancellation of orders just one day before the launch. Walmart faced a predicament, as it had overcommitted on the consoles and had to cancel pre-orders.

In response, the retail chain attempted to appease its customers by offering $519 gift cards and allowing them to reclaim their orders for the special edition console. This move was particularly appreciated by Zelda fans who had reserved the limited-edition Switch 2 for a hefty $519. The gesture aimed to make up for the unsatisfactory experience of having their orders canceled before the launch.

Walmart's customers affected by the cancellations reported receiving either a $519 gift card or the option to reclaim their order. The deadline for reclaiming the reservation was 48 hours, creating a sense of urgency among fans eager to secure their Switch 2. Most customers received either the gift card or the chance to reserve the console, but not both.

While the gift card granted a seemingly free Switch 2, it ultimately reflected Walmart's attempt to rectify its mistake and restore customer satisfaction.
