An Italian patent will provide an unexpected yet long-desired convenience for scooterists and motorcyclists at the Eicma, the international two-wheelers exhibition in Milan starting November 3rd and closing on November 8th. The first "intelligent" electric kickstand designed specifically for scooters and motorcycles will be presented as Stop &up by Spa (Stampaggio plastica affini), a company based in the Liguria hinterland.
Based in Rossiglione, Spa specializes in designing, industrializing, and producing components from thermoplastic materials. The company, led by Roberto Candelo in his second generation, is assisted by his daughter Carolina and Isabella.
Stop &up is equipped with an electro-oleodynamic actuation system that enables the vehicle to be lifted and positioned simply by pressing a button on the handlebar. This automation simplifies vehicle management during stops. The unique aspect of the system is its ability to adapt to various terrain types, including irregular, unconnected, or uneven surfaces. It can automatically position the motorcycle vertically, compensating for ground irregularities and expanding the support base, thus enhancing stability.
Candelo emphasizes that the idea of creating an automatic kickstand is not new, as other companies had attempted it with limited success. Traditional rigid kickstands have been removed from the market due to safety concerns as they could not determine if the vehicle was in a position to be raised. Stop &up addresses these issues by allowing insertion and removal exclusively with the brake and ensuring the wheels are stationary.
Additionally, the system prevents activation when the motorcycle is at an unsafe lateral inclination angle. It also includes a blocking mechanism for extended stops and a manual alternative mode of operation. In case of an electro-oleodynamic system failure, the device can be disconnected from the automatic actuation and used as a traditional kickstand according to the project's predetermined configuration.
Stop &up will be offered in differentiated configurations, sized based on the weight, structural features, and dimensions of various motorcycles. It will not be sold directly to consumers but will be installed by motorcycle manufacturers. The pricing has not been determined yet, with Candelo stating it will fall within the range of a high-end optional system, neither excessively costly nor extremely cheap.
