Quad diplomats finalise first leaders’ summit in two years before Trump-Xi meeting

Four top diplomats from the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, or the Quad, convened in Atlanta on Saturday to finalize preparations for the upcoming summit in the Philippines. This comes just weeks before US President Donald Trump is set to meet Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Shenzhen. The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, met his counterparts from India, Japan, and Australia during the Group of 20 (G20) foreign ministers' gathering.

They reiterated their commitment to a "free and open Indo-Pacific" and expressed concerns over "overcapacity" and non-market policies that disrupt global supply chains in critical industries. The joint statement, released by Japan's ministry of foreign affairs, emphasized the need to build "reliable and open global supply chains and trusted and resilient infrastructure".

Following the meeting, Rubio stated that all sides discussed "real progress" in turning shared priorities into tangible benefits for the Indo-Pacific. The Quad, an informal grouping of four democracies, aims to counter China's growing influence in the Asia-Pacific. Its leaders are scheduled to meet in Manila for their first summit in over two years.

However, the joint statement did not specify a date for the summit, only expressing their anticipation of its convening.
