Nvidia quietly gave RTX 40-series owners a new frame generation mode, and I measured it on my 4070 Ti Super

Does the frame generation "performance" mode live up to its promises?

Nvidia quietly gave RTX 40-series owners a new frame generation mode, and I measured it on my 4070 Ti Super

On October 13, Nvidia released a new frame generation mode for RTX 40-series and RTX 50-series graphics, called Preset C. This mode improves performance by up to 35% on the RTX 5060, but impact on Ada Lovelace GPUs like the RTX 4070 Ti Super is unclear. To test this mode on my RTX 4070 Ti Super, I played Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p with ray tracing set to Medium, DLSS Super Resolution set to Balanced, and all other settings maxed out.

Using DLSS Frame Generation Preset B, my 4070 Ti Super averaged 157.6 FPS, but switching to Preset C increased the average to 167.2 FPS, a 6.1% improvement. This gain is shorter than Nvidia's claim for the RTX 5060, likely due to the RTX 4070 Ti Super's higher performance. At 2x frame generation mode, Nvidia's RTX 5060 only gains 10%, while my RTX 4070 Ti Super had less to gain, removing about a quarter of the overhead.

Despite efforts to notice differences, Preset C didn't stand out from Preset B in gameplay conditions. While Nvidia claims some compromises in image quality, it's difficult to gauge the impact on different gameplay conditions. For most gamers, enabling Preset C might be a good idea for some extra performance with minimal drawbacks.
