Bhopal Metro Project: Nearly 50-Year-Old Sawmills Removed From Metro Route, 9 Units Sealed As Administration Begins Relocating 108 Sawmills

Bhopal Metro's construction route saw the removal of sawmills dating back nearly 50 years, with nine units sealed under administration's relocation efforts. The operation started around 10 am and extended late into the night, targeting 108 sawmills to be relocated to designated areas. The inaugural phase focused on units directly along the Metro path, which had caused construction delays.

The relocated mills will be housed at an 18-acre site in Palwaliya Road, while approximately 40 mills will be moved to Chhota Ratibad. The city's administration, led by SDM Lakhan Singh Chaudhary, deployed personnel from the Tehsildar, Patwaris, Bhopal Municipal Corporation, and Metro officials for the task. Initial protests from sawmill operators subsided as the administration claimed notices had been issued and the deadline had passed.

Plans for the second phase of the relocation are currently underway. Nine sawmills in Bharat Talkies Timber Market were sealed for occupying government land, following an eviction order from Tehsildar Nazul City Circle in a case related to unauthorized occupation of 0.0495 hectares. Despite a final notice, the operators did not comply, leading to their units being sealed.

The Bhopal Municipal Corporation assisted in the sealing process. Meanwhile, the BMC also demolished seven unauthorized shops in Malikhedi, earmarked for a goshala, and cleared encroachments from New Market and various other locations, including pushcarts, kiosks, and roadside stalls obstructing traffic.
