5 best superhero movies for people who don't like Marvel or DC

If superhero fatigue is creeping up on you, there are plenty of other superhero movies to explore. First up is "Chronicle," a unique blend of sci-fi and coming-of-age themes. Three teenagers gain telekinetic powers after discovering a glowing object in the woods. The film follows their journey, complete with a found-footage style that sets it apart from other superhero stories. Watch "Chronicle" on Apple or Amazon.

Next, try "Kick-Ass," a raunchy and violent superhero film that deviates from the usual Marvel and DC fare. Dave Lizewski, a timid teenager, dons a superhero costume despite lacking any training. His adventures include battles against a mob boss and an unlikely partner, Hit-Girl. "Kick-Ass" blends humor and action, making it a dark satire that won't hold back on the violence. Stream it on Apple or Amazon.

For a more grounded superhero tale, check out "Unbreakable." This M. Night Shyamalan film features David Dunn, a man who survives a train derailment with no injuries. Elijah Price, a comic book expert with brittle bone disease, believes David is a real-life superhero. Despite its twist, "Unbreakable" stands out for its realism and slow-burning plot. Catch it on FX or rent it on Apple or Amazon.

Next on the list is Pixar's "The Incredibles," a superhero family movie that pays homage to the golden age of comic books. Bob Parr, also known as Mr. Incredible, returns to the superhero scene after years of retirement. His family, each with unique powers, must embrace their roles as heroes. This film is a perfect mix of action, humor, and themes about family and identity. Stream it on Disney+.

Lastly, consider "The Mask," a superhero movie that might surprise you. Based on a comic book series, Stanley Ipkiss, a mild-mannered banker, gains superhuman abilities after putting on a magical green mask. His transformation into a trickster leads to a clash with a mobster and his girlfriend. With Jim Carrey as the star, "The Mask" delivers laughs, action, and a unique take on the superhero genre.
