SBP launches SMEConnect to simplify financing

Karachi, Pakistan - The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has introduced "SMEConnect," a centralized digital platform designed to streamline financing access for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). This new online portal underscores the bank's commitment to expanding a more SME-friendly financial ecosystem. SMEConnect intends to bridge the gap between SMEs and banking institutions by serving as a unified digital space for businesses seeking financial support.

The main objectives of SMEConnect include simplifying the financing application process for SMEs across Pakistan, improving accessibility, efficiency, and transparency in SME financing. This platform will not only simplify the loan application procedure but also allow SME applicants to track the real-time status of their applications.

In the event of a rejection, SME applicants will be informed of the reasons behind the decision. Additionally, the live Dashboard will provide SBP with comprehensive visibility of all SME financing applications and their statuses, both on an individual bank/DFI level and industry-wide.

Beginning from November 1, 2026, all SME finance applications must be submitted through the SMEConnect portal. After completing the necessary verifications, these applications will be forwarded to the applicant's respective bank/DFI. Banks and DFIs are now required to guide their customers in digitally submitting their financing applications via SMEConnect instead of visiting the branch. Furthermore, applicants submitting financing applications through their bank's website or app will be directed to SMEConnect.

The R-6 of Prudential Regulations for Small & Medium Enterprise Financing, which required banks/DFIs to allow applicants to digitally apply for financing, will be withdrawn starting November 1, 2026. To facilitate SME applicants, SBP recommends prominently displaying the SMEConnect link on the websites and apps of banks and DFIs. Moreover, banks and DFIs are urged to leverage all available marketing channels to raise awareness about the SMEConnect initiative.

SBP asserts that the launch of SMEConnect signifies the bank's dedication to promoting financial inclusion, fostering entrepreneurship, and enhancing the SME financing ecosystem. This ultimately aims to contribute to inclusive economic growth in Pakistan.
