Labuahan eatery operator fined RM3 for extra soup charge

Labuan's Director of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Directorate, Junaidah Arbain, has fined a local restaurant for failing to display the additional charge for soup on their menu. The restaurant was found to have included charges for rice and noodles but not for extra soup, which led to a consumer complaint through the ministry's e-Aduan portal.

The operator was issued a compound under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering (Price Marking for Goods and Charges for Services) Order 2020, which is governed by the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011. Under the order, individuals can be fined up to RM50,000, while companies may face fines of up to RM100,000.

Junaidah urged restaurant and food outlet operators to display all menus, including additional charges, clearly and prominently in Bahasa Melayu or with translation if presented in another language. She emphasized that transparent pricing is crucial for protecting consumer rights, as customers have the right to know the cost of goods and services before ordering or purchasing.

Junaidah stated that KPDN Labuan will continue to strengthen enforcement and monitoring activities to safeguard consumer interests and encouraged members of the public to report any business-related non-compliance through the ministry's official complaint channels.
