Rental scam exposed as two Ford Rangers intercepted en route to Mozambique
The Border Management Authority intercepted two suspected fraudulently obtained rental vehicles at Kosi Bay and arrested two men after discovering irregularities in their tracking records and cross-border documentation.
Two Ford Rangers, suspected of being fraudulently rented, were intercepted at the Kosi Bay Port of Entry while allegedly being smuggled into Mozambique. Border Management Authority (BMA) spokesperson Mmemme Mogotsi revealed the vehicles were stopped after Border Guards spotted irregularities during inspections and contacted the rental companies to verify documentation and movements.
Two men were arrested and face charges of possession of suspected stolen property, forgery, fraud and uttering. They are set to appear in court on October 30. The first Ford Ranger, a white 2025 double cab with Mpumalanga plates, was stopped around 12:30pm and its 75-year-old South African driver intended to cross into Mozambique.
The rental company stated they had no authorisation to export the vehicle. Upon verifying the vehicle's location via Cartrack, it was found the tracking unit had been removed. Meanwhile, the second Ford Ranger was identified after its rental company flagged it as a fraudulent rental. Both vehicles and their drivers were intercepted for further investigation.
The rental company was asked to provide authentic documents for verification. BMA Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato emphasised the importance of intelligence-led operations and cooperation with private-sector partners in preventing vehicle smuggling and fraud.
