Mumbai residents face less traffic congestion this festive season, thanks to a joint anti-illegal parking drive by the Mumbai Traffic Police and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). This initiative aims to clear roads and footpaths of unauthorized parked vehicles, ensuring smoother traffic flow and safer passage for pedestrians.
Special focus is placed on crowded commercial areas like Crawford Market, Mahapalika Junction, Metro Junction, and Mohammed Ali Road, which see heavy foot traffic and congestion during the festive shopping season. Around 60 personnel from three traffic divisions have been deployed to monitor these areas and take action against traffic violations, with towing vans ready to remove illegally parked vehicles.
The drive extends to other areas such as Chembur, Dadar, Maitri Park, MG Road, and Mulund railway station. Abandoned vehicles, illegally parked taxis, roadside hawkers, and obstructive handcarts have also been removed. Over 11 lakh cases of illegal parking have been dealt with in the past nine months, with most resulting in e-challans and some registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) provisions.
To aid motorists, 43 authorized pay-and-park locations have been added to Google Maps by the BMC. Several of these parking facilities had gone unoperational due to lack of lighting and basic infrastructure for four to six years. Now, motorists can locate these facilities through Google Maps. The BMC has also repaired potholes on roads to improve traffic movement.
This joint initiative aims to make Mumbai's roads more accessible during the festive season while preventing pedestrians from having to walk on busy roads due to encroached footpaths.
