MTG Darkhold Destiny 4 Commander Deck Bundles: Do They Look Good or Not?

Magic: The Gathering’s upcoming Marvel crossover, Darkhold Destiny, is generating interest with its upcoming Commander decks. Amazon is offering preorders for four Darkhold Destiny Commander decks, with two versions available: a standard bundle and a Collector’s Edition. The standard four-deck bundle is priced at $299.96, while the Collector’s Edition costs $639.96. This translates to $74.99 or $159.99 per deck, respectively.

Both bundles contain the same four decks: Strange Academy, Gods of Asgard, Midnight Sons, and Lords of Hel. Each deck contains 100 cards, including 30 new-to-Magic Commander cards, six double-sided tokens, a deck box, and a strategy guide. The main difference between the two bundles is the type of foil used on the legendary creatures. The standard version features two Traditional Foil legends per deck, while the Collector’s Edition uses Surge Foil treatments for all 100 cards.

The decks themselves appear to be intriguing on paper. For example, Strange Academy features Doctor Strange leading a blink deck that focuses on sending creatures out of play and bringing them back for repeated use. Lords of Hel revolves around Hela commanding a red-black token sacrifice deck. Meanwhile, Thor’s Gods of Asgard deck emphasizes equipment and large creatures, while Blade’s Midnight Sons deck revolves around vampires and life management strategies.

Given the cost, it is somewhat reassuring to see that these Marvel-themed decks offer more variety compared to previous expansions. However, without seeing the full decklists, it is difficult to definitively assess whether these decks will be competitive in the game’s meta when Darkhold Destiny releases. Nevertheless, for fans of the original Marvel Super Heroes expansion and those excited about the new story shared between Marvel and Wizards of the Coast, preordering the standard bundle at $299.96 seems like a reasonable choice.
