Maharashtra FDA Makes Food Companies Accountable For Disposal Of Expired Stock, Orders CCTV Monitoring And Strict Compliance | VIDEO

Mumbai, October 30, 2026: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has implemented a state-wide compliance order to hold food companies, e-commerce platforms, and retail chains responsible for the disposal of expired and damaged food products. Companies are required to maintain records of expired food products from segregation to destruction, and warehouses must have CCTV surveillance and locked quarantine zones.

Only authorized disposal facilities can accept the products, which must be slit or crushed before transport. The FDA seized Rs 5.01 crore worth of expired food stock between June and October 2026 and registered seven offenses against 34 accused individuals, including company directors, warehouse managers, disposal agencies, brokers, and sellers.

Companies must provide seven days' notice before disposing of 50 kg or more of expired stock and submit details of their disposal agreements and existing expired stock within 30 days. Penalties for non-compliance can reach up to Rs 10 lakh, and altering or concealing date marks may lead to prosecution.
