Khor Fakkan Port expansion to strengthen Sharjah's role in regional trade

Khor Fakkan Port is set to significantly enhance Sharjah's role in regional trade, with the emirate planning to more than double the port's container capacity. Sheikh Fahim bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Sharjah's chairman of the Department of Government Relations, revealed to The National that the port's capacity is set to increase from 3.5 million to 5 million annual containers, with aspirations of reaching 10 million in the longer term.

The expansion comes amid the emirate's efforts to strengthen its transport and logistics infrastructure. Situated outside the Strait of Hormuz, the port has gained increased attention as an alternative route for goods entering the UAE during disruptions linked to the US-Iran war. The government is actively working to ensure the availability of land, infrastructure, and investment opportunities to support this growth.

Sharjah's geographical position, being the only emirate bordering all six others, presents a significant economic opportunity and a large national responsibility to provide the necessary infrastructure. Sheikh Fahim is optimistic about the UAE's expanding rail network, which could change travel patterns for work, education, and leisure.

He hopes Etihad Rail's passenger service will become preferred for inter-emirate journeys, easing road congestion while offering environmental benefits. Additionally, Sharjah Airport is set to undergo expansion, with its annual passenger capacity expected to reach 25 million in 2027. This, along with investments in rail, roads, ports, and aviation, is expected to reshape the emirate, transforming its urban fabric.
