Japanese Ambassador Akio Isomata emphasized the importance of national reconciliation and economic development being closely linked during a gathering on Thursday (29). During the signing of a grant contract with Sivanarul Hope, a Mannar-based group, Isomata stated that Japan prioritizes assistance for the Northern and Eastern Provinces.

Japan has consistently provided support in various areas such as infrastructure, basic human needs, agriculture, fisheries, women's empowerment, and demining. Over 50 million USD has been allocated for demining efforts so far.

Ambassador Isomata and Kamalamoorthy signed a grant contract to establish a local products manufacturing and sales center in Mannar district, through the "Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects" (GGP) scheme. This financial support scheme, based on the concept of "human security," aims to protect and empower individuals, particularly the vulnerable, to live in dignity and free from fear and want. Japan allocated USD 97,371 (approximately LKR 32 million) for this project.

The initiative will benefit women in the region whose livelihoods are currently dependent on unstable income from primary industries. Through this project, they will gain skills in crafting handicrafts using materials from local palmyra trees, enabling them to achieve more stable income and strengthen their financial independence.

Shardkunniyamoorthy Kamalamoorthy, Secretary of Sivanarul Hope, expressed gratitude to the Government and people of Japan for their generous support through the GGP scheme, stating that the grant will strengthen the 'Palms Together' program and its work with women artisans in the North and East. Since 1989, Japan has provided a total of USD 65 million in assistance to Sri Lanka through the GGP scheme.
