A bus driver has identified five suspects in the kidnapping of prospective National Youth Service Corps members in Imo State on Independence Day. The driver testified during the resumed trial of the defendants before the Imo State High Court in Mgbidi. He identified one of the suspects as the individual who initially approached his vehicle during the attack, armed with an AK-47 rifle.
Another prosecution witness also testified that he saw two of the defendants wielding AK-47 rifles after the abduction along the Owerri–Mgbidi–Onitsha expressway. The bus driver and the witness maintained that they saw the defendants commit offenses such as conspiracy, hostage-taking, and unlawful possession of firearms. During the trial, the bus driver stated that he could clearly identify the first defendant as the person who led the 20 prospective corps members into a nearby bush after they were taken hostage.
Both witnesses' testimonies were admitted as evidence, and the trial was adjourned until November 3-6, 2026.
