The latest rival for the BYD Shark Performance, incoming Chery Grootman and JAC T9 PHEV will go on sale in early 2027.

Foton launches newfound partial electrical punch with Tunland V9

Foton unveiled its plug-in hybrid version of the Tunland V9, named the Tunland V9 PHEV, at the BAIC Africa Partners Conference in South Africa. Based on the flagship Tunland V9, the PHEV will be available in early 2027. The PHEV features a few exterior changes, including a second charging flap and PHEV badges on the front doors, but remains otherwise similar to the conventional diesel model.

Dimensions remain unchanged, with the PHEV measuring 5,617mm in length, 3,355mm in wheelbase, 1,910mm in height, and 2,090mm in width. The PHEV boasts a higher ground clearance of 250mm compared to the diesel variant's 240mm, and an increased wading depth of 800mm. Under the hood, the diesel engine from the diesel V9 is replaced by an in-house-made 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, delivering 140kW/320Nm.

A 32.8kWh battery pack powers electric motors on each axle, resulting in a combined output of 350kW/800Nm. The PHEV can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 7.9 seconds and has a range of 100km on electric power alone, which is 4km more than the Grootman's plug-in hybrid model. The PHEV is set to be offered in 10 colors, including three bespoke-to-model options.

Pricing is expected to be higher than the diesel-powered V9 LTD it is based on, but the exact figure will be announced in the new year.
