BYD, Gentari eye Petronas stations for flash charging

BYD and Gentari are teaming up to set up ultra-fast electric vehicle charging stations in Malaysia, with a focus on Petronas stations and highway corridors. The Chinese automaker is aiming to enhance charging options for its EVs in the Southeast Asian nation. Representatives from BYD Malaysia and Gentari recently signed a memorandum of understanding at BYD's headquarters in Shenzhen to explore the implementation of BYD's flash charging technology in Malaysia.

Specific details about the rollout timeline and investment figures have not been made public. The flash charging technology is capable of delivering rapid charging speeds to vehicles fitted with BYD's second-generation Blade Battery. The Denza Z9GT, one of the first models in Malaysia to support the system, boasts impressive charging capabilities.

It can charge from 10-70% in just five minutes and achieve 97% charge within nine minutes. This electric model is equipped with a large 122.49kWh battery and a 1,000-volt electrical architecture. Although existing BYD models can utilize the charging infrastructure, the speed of charging will vary based on each vehicle's specific battery capacity.

Jacob Ma, the managing director of BYD Malaysia, indicated that this collaboration represents a significant milestone in bringing the company's advanced charging technology to local consumers. The initial focus will be on selected Denza luxury showrooms before expanding to locations at Petronas stations, intercity routes, and highway rest and service areas.

Furthermore, the partnership will concentrate on building local expertise, including training and upskilling technicians to support Malaysia's expanding electric vehicle ecosystem. In addition to the charging infrastructure, Denza Malaysia has introduced a new exterior color option for the Z9GT, named Fjord Green. The company has already delivered more than 100 units of this model since its launch in the Malaysian market.

The Z9GT is a high-performance electric vehicle that produces an impressive 850kW, or 1,156PS, and can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just 2.7 seconds.
