Lagos man bags life jail for defiling 11-year-old girl

An Ikeja court has handed down a life sentence to Idris Ashimiyu for the sexual abuse of an 11-year-old girl. Ashimiyu was found guilty of one count of defilement after a trial where the prosecution presented evidence of the survivor's testimony. The judge, Abiola Soladoye, found the survivor's account credible and consistent, and determined that Ashimiyu did not consent to the sexual act.

Ashimiyu's counsel presented a witness who claimed the convict was beaten before being taken to the police station. Ashimiyu's acquittal on the charge was based on the survivor's testimony and the lack of evidence that he had engaged in consensual sexual activity with the child.
