This battle marked the decisive victory of King Afonso IV of Portugal and King Alfonso XI of Castile against Sultan Abu al-Hasan Ali of Morocco and Yusuf I of Granada. It was the culmination of their efforts to repel the last Marinid invasion of the Iberian Peninsula.
