Energy-efficient inference chip developer FuriosaAI raises $620M to solve the data center power bottleneck

South Korean AI chip startup FuriosaAI has successfully raised $620 million in funding to develop energy-efficient artificial intelligence processors, challenging the dominance of Nvidia. The funding round, led by South Korea’s National Growth Fund, brings FuriosaAI’s valuation to $2.9 billion. Global investors such as Cisco Investments, Abu Dhabi-based NeoFort Holdings, and QUDA Capital Partners contributed $110 million, while existing backers added the rest.

FuriosaAI’s energy-efficient Tensor Contraction Processor, built on its RNGD architecture, uses a three-dimensional matrix for computations, resulting in chips that consume less than half the power of Nvidia’s GPUs. The startup’s chips are already being used by LG Group, Upstage, and Samsung Electronics Co., and the new funding will help FuriosaAI scale production and develop a third-generation processor in collaboration with Broadcom.

The company’s CEO, June Paik, expressed confidence in the technology, aiming to shape the next generation of AI infrastructure.
