Archive of Our Own Could Be Down for Up to 4 Weeks After Going Dark for Emergency Maintenance
Popular fanfiction site Archive of Our Own went down for maintenance early this morning. Now, the website is claiming it may take up to a month to come back online.
Fanfiction website Archive of Our Own, or AO3, experienced an emergency maintenance shutdown early this morning. The site is now estimating the restoration could take up to four weeks. Initially, the maintenance was expected to last 12 hours, but it has since been extended. Readers are understandably upset, as they have lost access to their favorite fanfiction.
Social media has been ablaze with outrage, with users demanding action from authorities like the CIA, FBI, and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. While AO3 regularly undergoes maintenance, the downtime now appears to be occurring more frequently. The team has not disclosed the reason for the extended maintenance period. However, the possibility of a PHP security vulnerability may be linked to the outage.
The AO3 status page assures readers that a degraded version of the site will be available during the maintenance, but authors won't receive credit for impressions, Kudos, or comments during this time.
