AI startup Ravical bags £12m to power accountancy’s private equity boom

AI startup Ravical has secured £12.75 million in seed funding to become the tech backbone for accountancy firms undergoing a surge of private equity roll-ups. The investment round, led by European venture capital firm MMC and joined by Lakestar, Pitchdrive & Shapers, brings the startup's total funding to £18.7 million in its first year.

Over 100 European accounting companies already utilize the platform. Ravical aims to strengthen its presence in the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, expand across Europe and eventually enter the US market. The software targets mid-sized accountancy firms and private equity-backed consolidators, positioning itself as a solution to break the traditional link between revenue growth and hiring more staff.

As private equity activity accelerates in the accountancy sector, Ravical's co-founders contend that firms face significant integration challenges when acquiring other businesses. Co-founder and CEO Joris Van Der Gucht explained that Ravical serves as the foundational layer connecting acquired firms, standardizing processes and scaling expertise across a larger client base.

He added, "Every firm will use AI, so the real question is who controls it." While the sector awaits a breakthrough moment akin to legal AI unicorns Harvey and Legora, MCC Ventures' Mina Samaan noted that most AI startups in the industry are developing point solutions for single tasks or workflows. Van Der Gucht argued that while legal AI unicorns aim to help individual lawyers draft and research faster, the true value in accounting lies in the judgment and experience of a firm's best people.
