Chinese AI chipmaker Iluvatar CoreX announced on Wednesday that its new Tiangai 300 graphics processing unit (GPU) can match and potentially surpass Nvidia's H200 in real-world AI workloads, as the domestic player accelerates its home-grown technology push. During a live demonstration for mainland Chinese media outlets, the company showcased the Tiangai 300 outperforming the H200 in complex multimodal tasks, such as text-to-image and text-to-video generation using advanced AI models like Z.ai’s GLM-5.3, according to Xinzhixun, a Chinese tech media outlet.
The H200 is the most advanced Nvidia AI processor allowed for export to China under present US trade rules. In a text-to-image test, the Tiangai 300 achieved a 100% completion rate with a throughput of 0.101 images per second, compared to the H200's 87.5% success rate and 0.086 images per second. Despite taking 0.64 seconds longer to complete the task, the Chinese chip managed to reach 1.05 times the throughput of the H200 in typical deployment conditions, making it the first general-purpose Chinese GPU to match the US processor in empirical testing.
Iluvatar did not respond to a request for comment. The performance claims come as several Chinese GPU contenders, including Iluvatar, Biren Technology, MetaX Integrated Circuits, Enflame Technology, and Moore Threads, compete to deliver viable home-grown alternatives amid Beijing's self-sufficiency drive and tightening US trade curbs.
