AI cameras in Mumbai to dissuade people from dumping garbage in open

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a pilot project in Mumbai using AI cameras to discourage illegal garbage dumping in public spaces. The initiative aims to deter residents, commuters, and pedestrians from leaving waste in designated areas, which are known as Garbage Vulnerable Points (GVPs).

In the Gajanan Vatika area of Mahim, an AI-equipped camera will be installed. When the camera detects motion from someone approaching to dump garbage, it will activate a loudspeaker system to deliver a message, urging the offender to maintain cleanliness and refrain from littering in public areas. According to senior civic officials, individuals who repeatedly violate this rule will face hefty fines if they disregard the warning.

The pilot project is being initiated in the G/North ward, as it houses a significant number of GVPs identified across Mumbai. Each day, Mumbai generates over 7,000 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste, with a substantial portion collected from GVPs. These areas, often located in commercial markets or informal settlements, are notorious for accumulating waste and posing health and environmental hazards.

This AI camera installation is part of the BMC's comprehensive plan to eradicate GVPs through a ward-based approach. The plan includes setting up CCTV cameras, enhancing collection services, and conducting a behavioral change campaign. So far, 134 GVPs have been equipped with CCTV cameras, and over the past few months, 102 chronic dumping sites have been eliminated thanks to enhanced service analysis.
