Who is Kerala-born Nithya Raman? Indian-American leading Los Angeles mayoral race, why she’s compared to Zohran Mamdani
US mid-term polls: Nithya Raman emerged as the most prominent left‑leaning challenger to incumbent Mayor Karen Bass in the November 3 mayoral race. If elected in the November 3 polls, Raman will be the first Indian-American Mayor of Los Angeles.
Nithya Raman, an Indian-American born in Kerala and currently residing in Silver Lake, has emerged as a frontrunner in Los Angeles' mayoral race. She is the first Indian-American to be in the running for the position, which she would hold if elected in November 2023. Raman, a member of the Democratic Socialist movement, has served as a City Councilmember for six years and recently defeated incumbent Mayor Karen Bass in the November 3, 2023 election.
If victorious, she will become the first Latina mayor of Los Angeles, a city which she believes is currently leaderless and in dire need of change.
