What to expect ahead of the 2026-27 Southern Indiana women's basketball season
Rick Stein is entering his 28th season as USI women's basketball coach with high expectations. Here's why.
The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team, known as the Screaming Eagles, prepares for their 28th season under the guidance of coach Rick Stein. Their inaugural game will be on November 2 at Liberty Arena against Murray State Racers, who have dominated the Missouri Valley Conference in recent years. Following that, USI will face off against the second-place ACC team Louisville on November 8 at Evansville.
The season will kick off the Ohio Valley Conference on December 31 at home against Tennessee State, a favored team according to preseason polls.
Expectations are high for the Screaming Eagles, with the program being ranked No. 1 in the preseason poll by @OVCSports. Head coach Stein attributes this recognition to the team's achievements since joining the conference in 2022, during which they have had three winning seasons. This season, 11 players from last year's roster will return, a rarity in college basketball due to the transfer portal's prevalence. USI's head coach emphasizes the importance of utilizing their experience, despite having the same roster.
With last season's top scorer, Ali Saunders, no longer part of the team, senior forward Chloe Gannon will take on an elevated role. Gannon, a rebounder and scorer, has learned a great deal from Saunders and is now aiming to lead the team. As a new member, senior Chloe Gannon is excited to step into her new leadership position and is ready to help the team succeed. Another newcomer to the team is South Alabama transfer Tamara Ortiz, who is expected to make a significant impact on the Screaming Eagles this season.
Coach Stein has praised Ortiz's competitive spirit and her potential as a culture fit for the team. With three WNIT appearances under their belt, the Screaming Eagles are determined to reach the next level and potentially bring home an NCAA tournament berth. Coach Stein believes this team has a big target on their back, which will only fuel their determination to excel in the upcoming season.
