Trump floats idea of Venezuela becoming 51st state

On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump proposed that Venezuela could potentially become the 51st state in the United States, citing the strengthening of oil cooperation between the two nations. During a speech at a midterm election rally in Corpus Christi, Texas, Trump expressed his gratitude for the improving relationship with Venezuela, describing it as "very, very good" and "great."

He announced that the first 1 million barrels of free Venezuelan oil, secured through an agreement between the United States and Caracas, had arrived in the country. Trump emphasized the geopolitical and economic importance of this shipment, stating that it would give the US control over a significant portion of the world's oil supply. He added that the oil would be refined in Texas, including in the city of Corpus Christi.

Trump also pointed out that foreign investments were creating job opportunities in Venezuela, suggesting that the nation could become prosperous. He floated the idea of Venezuela potentially becoming a 51st state, saying, "Maybe someday soon it will become a prosperous 51st state." The US president stated that he would like to see Venezuela adopt a new governance structure, with an election for a governor instead of a president.

Trump's remarks echo previous proposals he has made regarding other foreign territories, including Canada.
