Static Repo Packs Give the Map. Autonomous Coding Agents Need the Body.
Over the past few months, we've seen fantastic innovations in static repository packing tools like ContextCraft ( contextcraft-ai ), repomix , and gitingest . If your workflow is copy-pasting a repository snapshot into the web interfaces of ChatGPT or Claude for an architectural high-level review, static budget packing (using Tree-sitter + PageRank + a knapsack solver) is genuinely great.…
Static repository packing tools like ContextCraft, repomix, and gitingest have gained traction in recent months. When using these tools for high-level reviews in web interfaces of AI models like ChatGPT or Claude, they prove effective. However, autonomous multi-step coding agents such as Claude Code, Cursor, Google Antigravity, and OpenAI Codex face a fundamental challenge known as the "Function Body Blind Spot."
This occurs when the agent cannot access a complete bug fix due to the pruning of function body details during the pre-packing process. The structural dilemma between pre-packing and on-demand pulling arises, as pre-packing freezes context before the agent begins investigating. To address this issue, token-context-mcp (v0.3.5) was developed, enabling the agent to progressively pull exact AST code context on demand, rather than relying on static pre-computed snapshots. The 5-step zoom-in process works as follows:
1. Global Orientation: Builds a PageRank-weighted symbol map of the entire repository, consuming minimal tokens (<0.13% of repo size).
2. Hybrid Localization: Utilizes SQLite FTS5 keyword search inside function bodies and AST symbol globbing.
3. Structural Skeletons: Emits function skeletons using Tree-sitter byte spans while preserving imports, class hierarchies, and type signatures.
4. On-Demand Full Body Pull: Retrieves the complete source body of the exact target symbol, including docstrings and 1-hop caller/callee signatures.
5. Blast-Radius Analysis: Traces multi-hop callers/callees and module imports before the agent edits a shared interface.
Empirical benchmarks demonstrate that on-demand MCP pull delivers 33/59 (55.9%) full bodies at ~7.6k tokens, compared to 2/59 (3.4%) for equal-budget static packing. For tasks where the zero-LLM deterministic 2-step pull missed, the standardized prompt protocol instructs the agent to gracefully fall back to direct file reading. Token-context-mcp is open-source (MIT), live on PyPI, and provides a set of 10 read-only retrieval tools by default.
