A delegation from the Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding has wrapped up its introductory tour of Brazil, concluding in Rio de Janeiro ahead of the 2027 edition. The group engaged with Portuguese-speaking translators and publishers, fostering cooperation and encouraging translators to participate in the award.
The delegation met with Laura Di Pietro, founder and editorial director of Brazilian publishing house Tabla, a firm known for Arabic literature. They discussed potential collaborations and motivated translators working with Tabla to enter the competition.
A visit to the National Library of Brazil saw discussions with library president Marco Lucchesi, focusing on translation as a connection between Arab and Brazilian cultures. They explored the role of libraries in safeguarding shared cultural heritage.
Two seminars were held, addressing the challenges of translating Arabic literature and the significance of specialized awards in supporting translators. The delegation also toured the Royal Portuguese Cabinet of Reading, housing a vast collection of Portuguese literature.
The tour underscored the historical ties between Arabic and Portuguese, including translations of the Quran and the Muqaddimah by Ibn Khaldun. This highlighted the award's mission to bolster cultural exchange through translation.
